ARM is promoter member of SPMT Consortium

SUNNYVALE, USA: SPMT, LLC, the entity responsible for licensing the Serial Port Memory Technology (SPMT) specification and administering the SPMT Consortium, today announced that ARM has joined the SPMT Consortium as a promoter member.

Together with fellow Consortium promoter members Hynix Semiconductor, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd and Silicon Image, ARM plans to promote serial port memory technology for broad market adoption as an industry standard. Founded in May 2009, the promoter members of the SPMT Consortium form the governing body of the organization and are responsible for developing the SPMT specification.

Serial Port Memory Technology is the first-of-its-kind technology for dynamic random access memory (DRAM) capable of delivering the bandwidth flexibility and scalability required by new generations of mobile devices, all at significantly reduced pin count, low power consumption and lower cost.

The technology will initially target the mobile handset market, enabling a new generation of devices capable of running highly data intensive, media-rich applications while at the same time extending battery life.

“ARM is a strong supporter of SPMT as a solution for reducing energy consumption and providing the bandwidth capabilities required by future high-performance mobile phones and portable computing devices such as netbooks,” said Peter Hutton, VP technology and systems, ARM.

“Joining the SPMT Consortium as a promoter member gives us an opportunity to participate in the establishment of an industry standard that will enable many of the features demanded by the next generation of mobile devices.”

“The Consortium and its members are extremely pleased to have ARM, a company whose technology solutions are powering the majority of mobile devices today, join our organization,” said Jim Venable, president of SPMT, LLC. “ARM’s contribution and commitment to the SPMT standard will be invaluable in the success of this new memory technology.”

Opportunities to participate in the advancement of the Serial Port Memory Technology exist for contributors and adopters. The SPMT promoters welcome companies and organizations to contact the Consortium about joining the group.

ARM provides technology for LG Electronics' DTVs

BANGALORE, INDIA: ARM today announced that LG Electronics has licensed ARM technology to power its digital TV (DTV) development revolution.

The ARM11 MPCore multicore processor provides flexible and cost effective processing in next generation DTVs and enables LG Electronics to target a range of platforms with the same architecture simply by implementing single or multiple SMP cores.

ARM Mali-200 and Mali-400 MP graphics processors will open the path to true 1080p resolutions, affording consumers a home cinema experience that includes high-definition graphics, whilst vastly improving the browsing experience on DTV user interfaces.

Consumers are looking for a full Web 2.0 experience from their DTVs. With Adobe and Open source software platforms, and the emergence of tru2way technology, consumers can receive interactive cable services, including video-on-demand, voting and polling, games, and e-commerce without the need for a separate set-top box (STB). Additionally, manufacturers are striving to build intelligent AV processing and develop home devices that are truly energy efficient.

“By licensing ARM technologies, LG Electronics will be able to offer a future-proofed premium-quality digital TV experience for today’s connected home,” said Seung-Jong Choi, research fellow of Digital TV Lab, LG Electronics. “The connected home relies on technology that is fully functional and that guarantees a high-quality, energy efficient multimedia experience. With Web 2.0 requirements moving into a connected and high definition home, LG Electronics has selected the ARM architecture to guarantee longevity for our own technology.”

“Today’s consumers are pushing manufacturers to produce home technology that allows an environment for sharing digital media and content services. End users are increasingly discerning and are demanding premium-quality experiences through digital TV,” said Mike Inglis, EVP and general manager, Processor Division at ARM.

“The combination of ARM CPU and Mali graphics processors clearly represents a compelling package for DTV and connected home technology manufacturers, who will be able to provide their customers with integrated, high-quality, Internet connected, multimedia-ready devices that are proven to be energy efficient.”

ARM innovations in high performance, energy efficient technology are supported by the industry’s largest network of Partners – the ARM Connected Community. This combination of technology innovation and collaboration is extremely attractive. The ARM Connected Community of over 500 Partners brings together leading silicon, systems, design support, software and training providers to provide a complete solution for products based on the ARM Architecture.

LG selects Cypress' CapSense for LCD monitors

SAN JOSE, USA: Cypress Semiconductor Corp. today announced that LG Electronics has selected its CapSense touch-sensing solution to implement the stylish user interface in the new W53 and W54 LCD monitors.

Using CapSense proximity-sensing, the monitors feature a clean, black bezel with control buttons that only illuminate when a user’s finger approaches. LG designers leveraged the flexibility of the PSoC programmable SoC architecture to implement LED animation control, I2C sensitivity control and other functions beyond touch sensing - a capability called CapSense Plus -- in the W53, W54 and other LCD monitors, as well as in the Scarlet II LCD TV line.

Cypress is the industry touch-sensing leader, with over 3 billion mechanical buttons replaced in mobile handsets, laptops, consumer electronics, white goods, automotive applications and more. LG has selected the CapSense solution for mobile handsets, air cleaners and other products in addition to LCD monitors and televisions.

LG’s W53 and W54 SMART Monitor Series offer top picture quality while greatly reducing eyestrain during extended use. These monitors include an Auto Brightness feature that allows them to automatically optimize their brightness and other picture settings based on the ambient light in the room and the content being viewed. The W53 and W54 monitors are available in sizes from 18.5 to 27 inches.

“CapSense enables compelling touch-sensing interfaces, and the integration of proximity sensing contributes to the unique design of our LCD Monitors,” said JunHo Shin, engineer for Business Solutions R&D at LG. “Equally as important, CapSense delivers well-established quality from the industry leader in touch-sensing technology.”

“Winning an initial design with a leading provider of elegant consumer electronics such as LG points to the innovative touch-sensing interfaces the CapSense solution enables,” said Dhwani Vyas, vice president of the User Interface Business Unit at Cypress. “Having LG select CapSense across multiple product lines is excellent validation of its flexibility, ease-of-use and reliability.”
