BANGALORE, INDIA: Sapphire Technology has announced an exciting development in graphics for several generations –- not only the fastest single GPU ever, but also the first video cards to support the advanced graphical features only available in Microsoft DirectX 11 and delivering spectacular video clarity, speed and visual effects, including over multiple monitors.
The SAPPHIRE HD 5870 is based on advanced new graphics architecture from the ATI division of AMD, the second generation of GPU to be built in its 40nm process. This is the very first series of graphics solutions to support the forthcoming DirectX 11, soon to be introduced with Windows 7 and supported in Windows Vista.
With a new 150GB/s memory interface supporting fifth generation GDDR5 memory and a new architecture with a total of 1600 stream processors and 80 texture units* the HD 5870 has twice the computing power of the previous generation.
It will be lightning fast with existing DirectX10.1, DirectX 10 and DirectX 9.0 games and applications –- but where it excels will be in new releases of software using DirectX 11 where it will support stunning new levels of detail, transparency and lighting effects.
All of this comes with the modest active power consumption of less that 190W –- and using Dynamic Power Management the card has a new super low-power idle mode at 27W.
At the same time, SAPPHIRE will introduce the SAPPHIRE HD 5850, with the slightly smaller configuration of 1440 stream processors and 72 texture units offering users access to the same new generation technology and full DirectX 11 support at a lower price point.

NVIDIA, Microsoft ally on high performance GPU computing
SANTA CLARA, USA: NVIDIA announced work with Microsoft to promote NVIDIA Tesla graphics processing units (GPUs) for high performance parallel computing using the Windows HPC Server 2008 operating system.
"The coupling of GPUs and CPUs illustrates the enormous power and opportunity of multicore co-processing," said Dan Reed, corporate vice president of Extreme Computing at Microsoft. "NVIDIA's work with Microsoft and the Windows HPC Server platform, is helping enable scientists and researchers in many fields achieve supercomputer performance on diverse applications."
NVIDIA Research developed several GPU-enabled applications on the Windows HPC Server 2008 platform, such as a ray tracing application that can be used for advanced photo-realistic modeling of automobiles. Related to this, NVIDIA worked with Microsoft Research to install a large Tesla GPU computing cluster and is studying applications that are optimized for the GPU.
In addition, a whole range of enterprise applications - such as data mining, machine learning and business intelligence, as well as scientific applications like molecular dynamics, financial computing and seismic processing - are taking advantage of the massively parallel CUDA(TM) architecture on which NVIDIA's GPUs are based to achieve higher levels of productivity.
The CUDA architecture enables developers to use the CPU and the GPU together in a co-processing model. Compute-intensive sections of an application use the parallel computing capabilities of the GPU, while the sequential part of an application's code runs on the CPU.
"The combination of GPUs and the Windows platform has been a great benefit to our VMD (Visual Molecular Dynamics) user community, bringing advanced molecular visualization and analysis capabilities to thousands of users," said John Stone, senior research programmer at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. "As we move toward even larger biomolecular structures, GPUs will become increasingly important as they bring even more computational power to bear on what will be highly parallelizable computational problems."
"The scientific community was one of the first to realize the potential of the GPU to transform its work, observing speedups ranging from 20 to 200 times while using a range of compute-intensive applications," said Andy Keane, general manager of NVIDIA's Tesla business. "Researchers are increasingly using Windows on workstations and in data centers due to strong development tools like Microsoft Visual Studio, its ease of system management and its lower total cost of ownership."
NVIDIA Tesla high-performance GPU computing products support Windows XP and Windows Vista in the workstation and Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 in the data center. Tesla C1060 and S1070 GPU computing products are available from most major system vendors including Cray, Dell, HP and Lenovo.

AMD takes market share lead thanks to ATI Mobility Radeon Premium GPUs

EM Photonics' CULA linear algebra library brings GPU computing to developers
SANTA CLARA, USA: EM Photonics released a beta version of CULA, an implementation of the industry-standard LAPACK linear algebra library designed and optimized for NVIDIA’s massively parallel CUDA-enabled graphics processing units (GPUs).
The millions of developers that rely on LAPACK routines for solving problems ranging from computational physics and structural mechanics to electronic design automation can now get up to a 10X boost in performance over a single quad-core CPU1 by using NVIDIA Tesla GPUs in their workstation or datacenter.
"One promising evolutionary path of high-performance computing architectures is a hybrid system consisting of multi-core CPUs and many core GPUs," said Professor Satoshi Matsuoka, of the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
"LAPACK is key for many scientific applications, so a CUDA-optimized implementation will significantly broaden the appeal of hybrid systems in science and engineering, giving them a strong competitive edge over competing architectures"
“We began a partnership with NASA Ames Research Center to create GPU-accelerated linear algebra libraries in 2007,” said Eric Kelmelis, CEO of EM Photonics. “As an offshoot of this project and through a partnership with NVIDIA, EM Photonics is releasing CULA and allowing developers to experience the computational performance of a supercomputer right at their desk.”
EM Photonics’ CULAtools is a product family comprised of CULA Basic, Premium, and Commercial. The CULA library is a GPU-accelerated implementation of the most popular LAPACK routines.
LAPACK is a collection of commonly used functions in linear algebra, used by millions of developers in the scientific and engineering community. The problems they tackle can often be approximated by linear models and can, therefore, be solved using linear algebra routines. CULA exploits the massively parallel CUDA architecture of NVIDIA’s GPUs to accelerate many of the common LAPACK routines.
“Our customer base has been anticipating the release of a linear algebra library similar to LAPACK. This fundamental math library brings the power of GPU computing to a much broader developer base in the scientific computing community”, said Andy Keane, general manager of the Tesla business unit at NVIDIA.

NVIDIA Tesla GPU for HP's flagship Z workstation
SANTA CLARA, USA: NVIDIA announced that HP's most powerful and expandable workstation--the HP Z800 Workstation--is now configurable with up to two NVIDIA Tesla graphics processing units (GPUs), another key indicator of the demand being seen for GPUs in the high performance computing (HPC) space.

Mentor's Nucleus GUI and Linux platform for ARM Mali GPUs

AMD soars in Q2-09, Intel, Nvidia show great gains
TIBURON, USA: Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry's research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, has announced estimated graphics shipments and supplier market share for the second calendar quarter of 2009.
Graphics chips (GPUs and IGPs) are the leading indicator of the PC market. The GPUs go into a system before it becomes a PC and gets into the hands of the customer.
After the channel stopped ordering GPUs and depleted inventory in anticipation of a long drawn out worldwide recession in Q3 and Q4 of 2008, expectations were hopeful, if not high that Q1’09 would change for the better.
In fact, Q1 showed improvement but it was less than expected, or hoped. Instead, Q2 was a very good quarter for vendors -- counter to normal seasonality -- but then these are hardly normal times. It’s clear the channel is gearing up for what it thinks is going to be a robust back-to-school season.
Traditionally, Q1 to Q2 sales decline due to summer vacations and preparation for the fall. This year preparation seems to have gotten off to an early start.
Total market
Year to year things were great. Shipments jumped up to 98.3 million units, up 31.3 percent from last quarter -- and most everyone fared well.

Things probably aren't going to get back to the normal seasonality 'till Q3 or Q4 this year, and we won't hit the levels of 2008 until 2010.
However, people still need to buy things. Old computers will fail, new employees will be hired and need machines, and of course software upgrades like Windows 7 will be coming along.
We are still predicting an upturn in the PC market in Q3 and Q4 and in particular for the graphics market (which serves not just PCs but aerospace and automotive, industrial systems, medical systems, kiosks and POS). We are optimistic because these are seasonally the best quarters.
* In Q4 there will be two new operating systems: Apple's Snow Leopard, and Windows 7 which will help stimulate new purchases in the holiday season.
* ATI & Nvidia will be introducing new 40nm designs with higher performance, GPU-compute, and surprisingly aggressive prices.
* The worst is over for inventories run down and the channel is now restocking for back-to-school, and the holiday madness.
* And yes, there is pent up demand.
* We still believe there will be an impact from the stimulus programs worldwide.
Graphics chips (GPUs and IGPs) are the leading indicator of the PC market. The GPUs go into a system before it becomes a PC and gets into the hands of the customer.
After the channel stopped ordering GPUs and depleted inventory in anticipation of a long drawn out worldwide recession in Q3 and Q4 of 2008, expectations were hopeful, if not high that Q1’09 would change for the better.
In fact, Q1 showed improvement but it was less than expected, or hoped. Instead, Q2 was a very good quarter for vendors -- counter to normal seasonality -- but then these are hardly normal times. It’s clear the channel is gearing up for what it thinks is going to be a robust back-to-school season.
Traditionally, Q1 to Q2 sales decline due to summer vacations and preparation for the fall. This year preparation seems to have gotten off to an early start.
Total market
Year to year things were great. Shipments jumped up to 98.3 million units, up 31.3 percent from last quarter -- and most everyone fared well.

However, people still need to buy things. Old computers will fail, new employees will be hired and need machines, and of course software upgrades like Windows 7 will be coming along.

MediaTek licenses ARM Mali-400 MP GPU

Chinese Academy of Sciences selects Vivante as GPU partner for netbooks
SUNNYVALE, USA: Vivante Corp. announced a collaborative relationship with the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ICT).

PGI, NVIDIA to deliver CUDA Fortran compiler
SINGAPORE: The Portland Group, a wholly-owned subsidiary of STMicroelectronics and a leading supplier of compilers for high-performance computing (HPC), today announced an agreement with NVIDIA under which the two companies plan to develop new Fortran language support for CUDA GPUs.
The NVIDIA CUDA architecture allows developers to offload computationally intensive kernels to the massively parallel GPU. Through function calls and language extensions, CUDA gives developers explicit control over the mapping of general-purpose computational kernels to GPUs as well as placement and movement of data between the x64 processor and the GPU.
The NVIDIA CUDA C compiler already provides this capability to C programmers. The CUDA Fortran compiler will provide this same level of control and optimization in a native Fortran environment from PGI.
“Fortran support for CUDA GPUs is a perfect complement to our existing roadmap for the PGI Accelerator Fortran and C compilers,” said Douglas Miles, director, The Portland Group. “It enables interoperability of PGI Fortran and CUDA C and gives PGI users a full range of options in porting and optimizing Fortran applications to leverage the power of CUDA-enabled NVIDIA GPUs.”
“The GPU computing developer community has made it clear there is a need and demand for a production-quality Fortran solution on the GPU,” said Andy Keane, general manager, Tesla GPU Computing Solutions, NVIDIA. “With their large base of Fortran developers for x64 processor-based HPC systems, PGI provides a perfect bridge for migration of production science and engineering codes from existing platforms to NVIDIA Tesla GPUs.”
The Portland Group and NVIDIA will release the Fortran language specification for CUDA GPUs at the International Conference on Supercomputing in Hamburg, Germany this week. The CUDA Fortran compiler will be added to a production release of the PGI Fortran compilers scheduled for availability in November 2009.

COMPUTEX TAIPEI wraps-up with record size, scale and turnout
TAIPEI, TAIWAN: For five days the organizer of COMPUTEX TAIPEI had only one fear; that the dreaded swine flu would strike at and possibly shut down their event, the world's largest ICT procurement hub. But the only flu at this venue was a fervent fever for everything to do with ICT that established fresh records for the size, scale and turn-out.
While other IT shows around the world had cut back, the visitors in Taipei were astonished to discover COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2009 running at max capacity. In fact, even in the face of adverse market conditions this show still managed to squeeze in growth by hosting 1,712 exhibitors who used 4,498 booths. During its first four days, the show welcomed 32,178 international buyers (+ 1 percent) from 214 countries and more than 100,000 international and local visitors (+ 5 percent). The top five countries for international buyers are from United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Mainland China and Korea with Australia new in the top 10 this year.
Top event in ICT shifts into multi-industry info-hub
This year's show was very different. Convergence was the keyword here. Yes, the venue continued to shine as the worlds top ICT procurement center, but it has also become apparent that its increasing taking on the function as an information hub for numerous industries, including for those one doesn't immediately link to IT.
It is here where everyone came from areas as diverse as medicine, automobiles, aerospace and education to create a multi-industry, multi-faceted venue that reflects the true diversity of the smart revolution.
The show's multi-cultural industry link was reflected with Acer teaming up with Google to unveil the Android Notebook. And it was here where AMD launched the world's first DirectX 11 graphics processor. Asus unveiled 11-inch Eee PC Seashell. Intel introduced Core i7. Microsoft announced the wide adoption of Window 7. Mio demonstrated its Litepad series and MSI displayed its latest line of X-Slim Series Notebook. Meanwhile, Thermaltake launched its Level 10, the latest high-end gaming tower designed by BMW.
Netbooks grab the limelight
Netbooks consolidated their status as the real show grabber especially since Taiwan serves up the perfect combo of computing and mobile Internet tech at affordable prices. Lightweight Netbooks with their long battery life are now part of the next hi tech wave. And with Taiwan way out front in the netbook market, COMPUTEX TAIPEI is the natural venue for international tier-one companies to seek partnerships with local companies.
Companies have spared no effort pushing Netbooks to perfection with the best in design and functions all embedded with core processors such as CPUs and GPUs. Green technologies on display
The theme "Mobile Technologies for a Green World" of COMPUTEX TAIPEI CEO SUMMIT FORUM serves as a great warm-up for the green technologies and products at the show, including CPU, HDD, PCB, power supply, LED backlight and NB. Intel's Ultra-Low Voltage Intel Core 2 dual core processor and 50 percent less power consumption HDD from Hitachi's EcoTrac Travelstart5K500.B new range are some examples.
The power savers introduced by Compucase and Gigabyte as well as SSD by A-Data, Apacer, and Transcend all reflect the green concept. Also, solar power products, fuel cells and LED applications are also going green. Vivitek's H9080FD Home Theater is the world's first LED Full HD Projector.
Self branding
At COMPUTEX TAIPEI the writing is on the wall. Taiwanese are increasingly heading for self branding. That's seen as Acer readies to overtake Dell as the worlds second-largest PC maker after Hewlett-Packard. Taiwanese started by making products for everyone else which carried foreign labels. But a quick cruise through COMPUTEX TAIPEI reveals That Taiwanese companies are rapidly building their own reputations as technology leaders.
Perhaps, the best example would be Eee PC from Asustek which has rendered the netbook, the hottest selling PC on the market. And nearby is Mediateck which brands their own driver chips, storage chips, designing chips for wireless communications and high-definition digital televisions.
Design and innovation soaring with high-tech trends
COMPUTEX TAIPEI design & innovation awards Ceremony announced its five Gold Award Winners at the international pre-show press conference on June 1. The event highlights the importance of design and innovation in today's ICT world. Thermaltake launched Level 10 Extreme Gaming Station of strong performance and brilliant designa brainchild by the company, AMD, and design consultancy BMW Group DesignworksUSA. Acer introduced its Netbook with Google's Android.

Procurement match-making meetings generating $700 million
This year, TAITRA arranged more than 2,000 1-on-1 procurement match-making meetings in three show days. These procurement meetings generated on-site business worth a projected $ 100 million dollars and create $700 million in follow-up business. (This year's three-day affair added an extra day to previous two-day events and attracted 256 overseas companies from 42 countries).
Leader talks were 256 representatives from top firms (invited by Taiwan's Foreign Ministry and TAITRA) with annual sales exceeding US$10 million from 42 countries. Many firms represented emerging markets such as Turkey, Argentina, Russia, India and the UAE. Among them, 20 were from key names such as SIEMENS and Alcatel-Lucen (Germany), Best Buy and Future Shop (Canada), ESPRINET (Italy), and Ryoden (Japan) all globally recognized buyers.

While other IT shows around the world had cut back, the visitors in Taipei were astonished to discover COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2009 running at max capacity. In fact, even in the face of adverse market conditions this show still managed to squeeze in growth by hosting 1,712 exhibitors who used 4,498 booths. During its first four days, the show welcomed 32,178 international buyers (+ 1 percent) from 214 countries and more than 100,000 international and local visitors (+ 5 percent). The top five countries for international buyers are from United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Mainland China and Korea with Australia new in the top 10 this year.
Top event in ICT shifts into multi-industry info-hub
This year's show was very different. Convergence was the keyword here. Yes, the venue continued to shine as the worlds top ICT procurement center, but it has also become apparent that its increasing taking on the function as an information hub for numerous industries, including for those one doesn't immediately link to IT.
It is here where everyone came from areas as diverse as medicine, automobiles, aerospace and education to create a multi-industry, multi-faceted venue that reflects the true diversity of the smart revolution.
The show's multi-cultural industry link was reflected with Acer teaming up with Google to unveil the Android Notebook. And it was here where AMD launched the world's first DirectX 11 graphics processor. Asus unveiled 11-inch Eee PC Seashell. Intel introduced Core i7. Microsoft announced the wide adoption of Window 7. Mio demonstrated its Litepad series and MSI displayed its latest line of X-Slim Series Notebook. Meanwhile, Thermaltake launched its Level 10, the latest high-end gaming tower designed by BMW.
Netbooks grab the limelight
Netbooks consolidated their status as the real show grabber especially since Taiwan serves up the perfect combo of computing and mobile Internet tech at affordable prices. Lightweight Netbooks with their long battery life are now part of the next hi tech wave. And with Taiwan way out front in the netbook market, COMPUTEX TAIPEI is the natural venue for international tier-one companies to seek partnerships with local companies.
Companies have spared no effort pushing Netbooks to perfection with the best in design and functions all embedded with core processors such as CPUs and GPUs. Numerous international big brands have introduced products for Netbooks: Ion by Nvidia, the new Atom processors by Intel, and Snapdragon by Qualcomm. Green technologies on display
The theme "Mobile Technologies for a Green World" of COMPUTEX TAIPEI CEO SUMMIT FORUM serves as a great warm-up for the green technologies and products at the show, including CPU, HDD, PCB, power supply, LED backlight and NB. Intel's Ultra-Low Voltage Intel Core 2 dual core processor and 50 percent less power consumption HDD from Hitachi's EcoTrac Travelstart5K500.B new range are some examples.

Self branding
At COMPUTEX TAIPEI the writing is on the wall. Taiwanese are increasingly heading for self branding. That's seen as Acer readies to overtake Dell as the worlds second-largest PC maker after Hewlett-Packard. Taiwanese started by making products for everyone else which carried foreign labels. But a quick cruise through COMPUTEX TAIPEI reveals That Taiwanese companies are rapidly building their own reputations as technology leaders.
Perhaps, the best example would be Eee PC from Asustek which has rendered the netbook, the hottest selling PC on the market. And nearby is Mediateck which brands their own driver chips, storage chips, designing chips for wireless communications and high-definition digital televisions.
Design and innovation soaring with high-tech trends
COMPUTEX TAIPEI design & innovation awards Ceremony announced its five Gold Award Winners at the international pre-show press conference on June 1. The event highlights the importance of design and innovation in today's ICT world. Thermaltake launched Level 10 Extreme Gaming Station of strong performance and brilliant designa brainchild by the company, AMD, and design consultancy BMW Group DesignworksUSA. Acer introduced its Netbook with Google's Android.

Procurement match-making meetings generating $700 million
This year, TAITRA arranged more than 2,000 1-on-1 procurement match-making meetings in three show days. These procurement meetings generated on-site business worth a projected $ 100 million dollars and create $700 million in follow-up business. (This year's three-day affair added an extra day to previous two-day events and attracted 256 overseas companies from 42 countries).
Leader talks were 256 representatives from top firms (invited by Taiwan's Foreign Ministry and TAITRA) with annual sales exceeding US$10 million from 42 countries. Many firms represented emerging markets such as Turkey, Argentina, Russia, India and the UAE. AMD triples performance of ATI embedded graphics chips
SUNNYVALE, USA: AMD announced the ATI Radeon E4690 graphics processor unit (GPU) designed to enable a whole level of new reality for embedded graphics applications with more than triple1 the 3D graphics performance of prior AMD embedded products.
