NI, Tektronix develop industry's fastest PXI digitizer

AUSTIN, USA: National Instruments announced the joint development of a high-speed digitizer with Tektronix, a leading provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation.

The PXI Express digitizer sets a new milestone for PXI modular instrumentation performance, with greater than 3 GHz bandwidth, sample rates beyond 10 GS/s, data throughput of more than 600 MB/s and multi-module synchronization capabilities.

Because of this collaborative development effort, engineers and scientists will experience a new level of measurement performance and test productivity in demanding high-speed applications such as those found in physics and experimental research, aerospace and defense, communications, semiconductor and consumer electronics industries.

"National Instruments is excited to work with Tektronix and bring their core signal acquisition technology to the PXI platform," said Dr. James Truchard, president, CEO and cofounder of National Instruments. "We have worked for many years to deliver productivity improvements to engineers in automated test through LabVIEW and PXI, and this new module represents the highest performance acquisition capability that we've delivered in this platform to date."

While National Instruments and Tektronix have collaborated on various projects for more than 20 years, the digitizer represents the first joint hardware development project between the two companies and takes advantage of the strengths of both companies to deliver advanced performance for demanding applications.

Proprietary Tektronix ASICs and design expertise provide the basis for high-speed signal acquisition with low noise and high linearity, delivering superior signal integrity.

The National Instruments leadership in graphical system design software, proprietary Synchronization and Memory Core (SMC) technology and expertise in PC-based instrumentation offer high data throughput for faster test execution and precision multi-module timing and synchronization capability for building high-channel-count and integrated test systems.

As part of the NI PXI platform, the new digitizer joins a family of products designed for high measurement throughput using high-bandwidth and low-latency PCI and PCI Express bus technologies.

Engineers and scientists can integrate NI digitizers into test systems comprising any of the more than 1,500 instruments available for the PXI platform, ranging from precision DC to RF.

The new digitizer will integrate with other PXI instruments and NI LabVIEW industry-standard software for instrument control and automation, NI LabWindows/CVI ANSI C software development environment and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET development tools to offer a range of programming options.

The official product release and first shipments of the new digitizer will be available from National Instruments in 2010, with lead user engagements continuing through the end of 2009.

Tektronix releases Educator’s Resource Kit

BANGALORE, INDIA: Tektronix Inc. has released a comprehensive new Educator’s Resource Kit that uses hands-on problem-based laboratory experiments to teach students the fundamentals of test and measurement for basic electronics.

The kit is designed to help ensure that students are prepared to be immediately productive in the workplace and able to use the latest in test and measurement instrumentation.

Virtually every electronic product developed today is an embedded system and may contain microprocessors, microcontrollers, DSPs, RAM, Flash, EEPROMs, FPGAs, A/Ds, D/As, serial and parallel buses, embedded audio and switch-mode power supplies.

Students need to be trained on the test equipment and procedures used to design and troubleshoot these multi-component embedded systems. The labs in the Educator’s Resource Kit address the most common challenges faced in the electronics industry today.

“With the rapid pace of change in the electronics industry, educators are finding it increasingly challenging to keep their curriculum current with the latest advances. Staying current is particularly important, and daunting, in embedded systems design,” said Bob Bluhm, vice president and general manager, Value Oscilloscope Product Line, Tektronix.

Materials include six different scalable, problem-based laboratory experiments with an instructor’s guide and student reference fact sheet for each experiment, a training board to provide real-world signals for the lab experiments and an Oscilloscope Reference Guide that mounts directly on the oscilloscope and details the common controls and features of today’s digital oscilloscopes.

Labs span such topics as Introduction to Oscilloscopes, Introduction to Arbitrary/Function Generators, Parallel and Serial Bus Analysis and Debugging a Digital Design.

Tektronix speeds debugging of serial, parallel digital signals for embedded designers

BANGALORE, INDIA: Tektronix Inc. has announced the new MSO3000 Mixed Signal Oscilloscope Series.

The new series provides the embedded system designer with the ability to visualize and analyze analog, digital and serial signals on a single instrument. The MSO3000 Series offers the right mix of performance and price with up to four analog and 16 digital channels, 100 to 500 MHz bandwidth, 5M record length and 2.5 GS/s analog sample rate for system debug.

With this new addition to the industry-leading MSO/DPO family, Tektronix now offers a complete range of performance options from 100MHz to 1GHz enabling design engineers to simplify and speed debugging of complex embedded systems.

In today’s market, embedded systems designers are looking for test solutions with the versatility to monitor digital, analog and serial data signals. This versatility is particularly important when performing system-level troubleshooting across a wide range of integrated components, such as microprocessors and microcontrollers, FPGAs, A/Ds, D/As, serial and parallel buses, embedded audio and switch-mode power supplies.

At the same time, design engineers are under pressure to keep a tight rein on costs. Given its versatility, performance and high channel count, the mixed signal oscilloscope (MSO) has emerged as the tool of choice for design and debug of these advanced embedded systems.

For mixed signal design and analysis, the MSO3000 Series provides 16 digital channels. These channels are tightly integrated into the oscilloscope's user interface, simplifying operation and making it possible to solve mixed signal issues easily.

The color-coded waveform display simplifies viewing of digital waveforms, displaying ones in green and zeros in blue. This makes it easy to recognize the logic state of a signal without having to scroll to a transition.

Digital waveforms can be grouped and labeled, greatly reducing setup time. MagniVu high-speed acquisition provides confidence when making critical timing measurements on digital waveforms with the acquisition of 10,000 points at up to 8.25 GS/s (121.2 ps resolution), providing significantly finer timing resolution and capturing narrower glitches than comparable MSOs on the market.

The MSO3000 Series provides a comprehensive set of features to speed every stage of debugging a new design. Embedded system designers can easily discover intermittent problems with a 50,000 waveform per second capture rate and intensity-graded digital phosphor display technology.

The designer can then capture signal anomalies and glitches with a complete set of triggers, including parallel data and serial packet content. The trigger is applied across all input channels and automatically time correlates all analog, digital and serial signals.

Wave Inspector controls enable automatic search across all analog, digital, serial and parallel data signals for a specific event of interest. Wave Inspector will automatically mark every instance of the event enabling rapid navigation between them. Finally, the designer can quickly analyze signals with 29 automated measurements, advanced waveform math and specialized application support for serial bus analysis, power analysis and video debug.

Like other Tektronix MSO/DPO bench oscilloscopes, including the MSO/DPO4000 and MSO/DPO2000 Series, the MSO/DPO3000 Series enables embedded system designers to improve the performance of their designs and reduce time to market. For serial bus applications, a single signal often includes address, control, data and clock information. This can make isolating events of interest difficult.

The MSO/DPO oscilloscopes offer a robust set of tools for debugging serial buses with automatic trigger, decode and search for I2C, SPI, RS-232/422/485/UART, CAN, LIN, and I2S/LJ/RJ/TDM standards.

Additional application support packages automate power measurements and perform HDTV and custom video analysis. To meet the need for longer battery life devices and for green solutions that consume less power, power-supply designers can now quickly and accurately analyze power quality, switching loss, harmonics, safe operating area (SOA), modulation, ripple, and slew rate (di/dt, dv/dt) and comply with national and regional power quality standards.

The DPO3PWR power analysis module provides automated, repeatable power measurements with a touch of a button; no external PC or complex software setup is required. The DPO3PWRBND Power Analysis Solution Bundle combines all of the essential tools needed to perform typical power measurement and analysis tasks with savings up to 25 percent.

With the MSO/DPO oscilloscopes’ fast waveform capture rate and intensity-graded signal view, video engineers can now see more video signal detail and access standard features such as IRE and mV graticules, holdoff by fields, video polarity, and an Autoset smart enough to detect video signals.

The optional DPO3VID application module provides the industry's most complete suite of HDTV and custom (non-standard) video triggers.

Pricing and availability
Prices range from $6,350 MSRP for a two-channel 100MHz MSO3012 to $14,700 MSRP for a four-channel 500MHz MSO3054 with an included P6316 digital probe. All new models are available for purchase and delivery.
